Although we have never had any requests for webmail, we have installed it on all client servers to try out. The great
thing about these scripts are that they are basically a thin client that checks the mail after all the other checks we
have installed over the years. For the past few months we have tested various webmail implementations and checked to see
which would and would not compromise the servers. We think we have a simple, safe and effective solution. This program
simply checks your folder on /var/spool (which is safe) and does this after the email has been through the ringer (so to
speak).
These are a few reasons why we do not recommend this for large deployment. And why we strongly urge it to only be
used by travelers/emergency users. Even our own usage is if we get a phone call to check an email, are out of
the office and need to read the email immediately. We feel large deployment and usage by all employees is not necessary
because of these reasons.
1. 99 percent of all of your users are stationary all the time and don't need access from multiple computers.
2. We currently spread retention of address books, years of email per user (quite a few of you have emails stored
from now back to 2001) and trash folders across every workstation processor and harddrive. If we tried to do this on
one server then it would be a disaster to say the least. The type of server required to do this would cost quite a bit
of money and support (the people selling webmail solutions promote the good parts but don't talk about the
bad parts such as downtime, recovery from a crash etc). It's not that we can't install this server, I would just be
shocked if any of you would want to spend the money on this type of server when this is so cheap and gets the job done.
3. The nominal employee is trained and knows how to use their current email client.
4. Security would be compromised expotentially with regard to the number of users. I could go on with this list
but am betting no one cares.
Although we advise against the upgrade to the Pro version we should tell you that a professional version does exist that
has a trash folder, address book and a other features. It's cost is not much higher than this version (I think it was
450.00 but the server required to use it will be around 4 or 5 thousand). Anyway, since this is for more
of a traveling/emergency usage user we didn't install it for trial. We have only installed the standard version because
the pro version will require us sitting down and figuring out costs of a more robust server and support. This setup
however is astronomically cheap at 250.00 (this is what we must pay the guy that wrote it for a license) and
installs on your current server because it doesn't retain any overhead.
Let us know if you want to keep it on your server and we will pay endymion.com the 250.00 and bill you the same
250.00. If you have any question feel free to email us at support@verinix.com or call 800-529-3403 or 706-643-1010.
